Professor Yuen Kwok-Yung, our managing director, and Professor Malik Peiris (HKUMed) have been awarded the 2021 Future Science Prize in life sciences, recognizing their pivotal contributions to understanding the origins of severe acute
respiratory syndrome (SARS) and its impact on combating COVID-19. This prestigious honor acknowledges their groundbreaking research in the field of emerging infectious diseases, leading to more effective response strategies.
HKU President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Xiang Zhang, congratulated Professor Yuen on this significant achievement, underscoring HKU's dedication to research excellence. Dean of Medicine at HKU, Professor Gabriel Leung, highlighted the award as an inspiration for students and young researchers to pursue scientific advancements for societal betterment.
Established in 2016, the Future Science Prize celebrates outstanding scientists in Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau for their remarkable discoveries and innovations. Awarded across various categories like Life Science, Physical Science, and Mathematics and Computer Science, each prize includes a substantial monetary award of $1 million.
